Electrical Failure Cause Fire in Siloam Springs Home

6/29/2022 (Permalink)

Electrical breaker box fire caused by overloaded electrical system This electrical fire was caused by overloaded electrical circuits

Electrical failures were responsible for 46,700 home fires each year in 2015-2019 according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).  These fires were responsible for an estimated $1.5 billion in direct property damage per year.  If your Siloam Springs home is affected by an electrical fire, call SERVPRO of Springdale North, Southwest Benton County to restore your home.

Home fires caused by electrical failure involve some sort of arcing, which is caused by an unintentional discharge of electricity between conductors.  These arc faults can produce enough heat to cause a fire.  The most common sources of arc faults are worn out receptacles, damaged connectors, frayed appliance cords, loose connections in junction boxes, as well as faulty switches and receptacles.

Older homes with aging electrical systems are another source of arc faults.  Normal wear and tear or systems that cannot handle the greater demand of electricity from modern appliances are a couple of the reasons.

The three most common areas for home electrical fires to originate is the kitchen, the bedroom, and followed by the ceiling/attic space.  These three areas account for 41% of the home fires involving electrical failure.  It is thought that electrical fires are more prominent in these rooms because of the increased use of electricity by the oven or cooking range, space heaters and electric blankets.

Prevent Grill Fires in you Bentonville Home

Gas grill grates being cleaned with a long handle wire brush Help prevent grill fires in your Bentonville home by keeping your grill clean

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the most common causes of gas-fueled grill fires are failure to clean, having the grill too close to flammable objects, leaving the grill unattended, and leaks or breaks in the gas line.  To help prevent grill fires, use the cleaning procedures below.  If your Bentonville home experiences a fire, the professionals at SERVPRO of Northwest Benton County are there to restore your home.

All you need to clean your grill is a long-handled wire brush, a wire bottle brush, a five-gallon bucket, grease cutting dish soap, cleaning vinegar, baking soda and some elbow grease.  Start by firing up the grill, close the lid, and let it come to full temperature.  Let the extreme heat burn off any stuck-on food or grease.  This should take approximately 30 minutes.  Use the wire brush and bucket of warm soapy water to scrub off all the carbon from the grates.  Then turn off the gas, disconnect the gas source, and let the grill cool.  After the grill cools, remove all the grates, flavorizer bars, and anything else from the grill you can easily take off.  Submerge these items in warm soapy water, soaking for at least 30 minutes.  The firebox is exposed and ready to be cleaned.  Place an empty bucket underneath the grease tray opening to catch the debris and soapy water.  Scrape off all the caked-on gunk from inside the firebox.  Use water to rinse any loose debris from the firebox.  After the grates and pieces have soaked, scrub them with a wire brush.  Mix the vinegar and baking soda to make a thick paste.  Use this paste on really stubborn gunk.  Rinse all surfaces clean, making sure to thoroughly dry cast-iron grates to avoid rust.  Use clean warm water with soap to clean the entire outside of the grill.  A large kitchen sponge works best, as this will help avoid scratching the finished surfaces of your grill.  Once all the parts are thoroughly clean and dry, reassemble, and connect the gas line.  Fire up the grill, close the lid, and let everything heat up for 15 minutes.  You are done!  Celebrate by barbecuing some burgers and hot dogs.

Fire Damage to your Fayetteville Garage

5/25/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot damage to the ceiling in this garage in Fayetteville Fayetteville Garage Fire

Fires damage garages in thousands of homes across America every year.  Garages attached to your home pose the greatest threat to keeping your family safe.  Everyday items like fuel cans, propane tanks, and lawn mowers are innocently stored in the garage.  These items are common causes of garage fires.  Contact SERVPRO of Fayetteville, Springdale, and South Washington County for all your fire clean up.

Flammable liquids, like lawn mower fuel and propane, are commonly stored in the garage.  Gasoline is a powerful accelerant for fire.  Gasoline fumes can be trapped in your garage, creating an environment for a house fire.  Storing your gas cans and propane bottles away from your home will help keep your family safe.

Lawn mowers are common causes of fires.  Fires start when fuel or oil is added to a very hot engine that has been in use.  The hot muffler can ignite the vapors and start your lawn mower on fire.  Fill your mower with gas and oil before starting to mow your lawn, preferably outside of the garage.  Wiping up fuel or oil spills and properly disposing of the rags will help prevent fires.  Remember to store your fuel and oil away from the mower.  There have been incidents of gas containers catching fire from a mower’s hot engine or muffler.

    • Pull the pin at the top, near the nozzle
    • Aim, keep a safe distance and point the nozzle at the base of the fire
    • Squeeze the two handles together, releasing the extinguishing agent
    • Sweep from side to side until all the flames die down or the extinguisher is empty
  • Yell “Fire” multiple times and go outside immediately. It is important to Get Out and Stay Out.  Focus on you, your family, and people around you.  Leave your things behind.

What to Know When Buying a Home with Fire Damage in Fayetteville

7/1/2021 (Permalink)

If you're buying a house with fire damage, trust the fire damage restoration experts at SERVPRO to help you get the property back to normal.

When buying a home with fire damage, it’s important to be cautious and ensure that the property is safe. Buying a fire-damaged house in Fayetteville requires an inspection from a certified home inspector, an electrician, and sometimes a structural engineer. Here’s what else you need to know about buying and repairing fire damaged homes.

Pros of Buying a House with Fire Damage

The housing market in Fayetteville is extremely competitive. For some house hunters, they may be feeling brave enough to put an offer on any home — even a house with previous fire damage. The biggest pro to buying fire damaged houses? The lower price tag. But there are a few things you should know first:

  • When did the fire happen? Fires from many months or even years ago usually mean some repairs have already been made. So, repairing a fire-damaged house will cost less once you close if this is the case.
  • Is the property undervalued? Buying an undervalued house means a higher return-on-investment, especially if you can make repairs quickly and affordably.

What to Know During the Buying Process

You won’t get a good idea of when the fire happened, what repairs have been made or need to be made without an inspection. Get the house inspected by a certified home inspector and bring in an electrician to examine the wiring for fire damage. If the damage is significant, a structural engineer may need to inspect the house.

Repairing Fire Damaged Homes

Fire damaged homes often need a complete gut before renovation can start. This is where you can make a healthy ROI if you do your homework. Changing the floor plan and adding modern amenities can make the home attractive to buyers and increase its value.

  • Make sure the home is examined for structural damage before tackling cosmetic issues.
  • Hire a professional to clean the entire home of debris.
  • Start at the bottom, rebuilding from the foundation up to the attic trusses.

Fire Drill Tips for Managing your Commercial Business in Springdale

6/17/2021 (Permalink)

Have you put in place a strategic fire drill plan?

Most businesses are required by OSHA and fire department codes to conduct regular fire safety drills. However most employees don’t enjoy these drills because it takes away from their daily work tasks to plan for something that they would argue may never even occur. But, they do occur and they occur even more frequently whenever people aren’t being cautious and aware of their surroundings in the workplace. We’ve seen businesses not plan for a disaster and when a fire does happen, they aren’t able to put out the fire or coordinate a safe effort to leave the building without inciting panic.

Having a designated strategy as you conduct fire drills will keep your employees safe in the event of a fire, so let’s make the most out of it while we’ve already begun the conversation around fire safety.

Maybe it’s because we all practiced them in school or maybe it’s because of the time taken out of the day, but fire drills have developed a reputation as a sort of juvenile exercises. But these are not pointless requirements to meet; there is still a need for knowledge of fire safety in the workplace.

How to be effective while conducting a fire drill training session:

  • Take them seriously.
    • Your team won’t take it seriously if you don’t.
    • Explain to them where they are to go in the event of a fire
    • Show your employees the best routes to get out of the building quickly (including any fire escapes or exits that aren’t regularly used)
    • If your facility provides fire extinguishers in your facilities, Show them where fire extinguishers are located and how to use them. Remember: Do NOT try to extinguish a fire that is already out of control. It’s best to use your judgment here but the most important thing is to get the employees out of the building.
    • Don’t warn your employees that a drill is coming, and don’t blow it off when it happens.
  • Prepare your team ahead of time.
    • Review your fire safety plan on a quarterly basis so that any new employees have a chance to participate.
    • It’s more memorable to your team to have them physically go to the meeting location instead of showing them on a paper map or pointing.
  • Create a script for customer-facing roles.
    • Many employees spend their days on the phone with customers in one way or another. Consider this when talking to your team and give them a “Script” to end a call in the case of an emergency. Usually the customers can hear the fire alarm going off in the background, so they generally seem to understand the situation.
      • “Due to a local emergency this call must be disconnected. I’m sorry for any inconvenience. Please call back and we will be prepared to help you promptly, then.”

The most important part of a fire drill is remembering why you’re doing it and whom you’re doing it for. You’re not just exiting a building to check off a box, but to ensure the safety of the people you’re responsible for. Keep that in mind and make each fire drill matter.

How to select the right Fire Damage Restoration Company

5/14/2021 (Permalink)

Factors and considerations to help you pick a fire restoration company that can meet your expectations.

Fires can be incredibly destructive. Still, people underestimate what water and flame retardants to extinguish the blaze can do. These elements require a different approach when it comes to fire and smoke restoration and cleanup.

Because of the critical role a fire restoration company plays in ensuring your home or business recovers, it’s vital to find the right one. Knowing what to look for can make the choice easier in an already stressful time.

Here are some of the primary elements to look for when choosing a fire damage restoration company:

Certifications

Certification is one of the essential factors to consider when choosing a fire restoration company. Make sure they have all the necessary state and local certifications that will legally allow them to provide restoration services and that they are valid.

Look for an IICRC Certification in particular, but there may be additional certifications for other services provided by the same company. Examples of these services include commercial and structural drying and mold remediation.

Expertise

Besides having the proper certification, the company's employees should also be fully licensed and well-trained fire-damage experts, able to handle a wide range of scenarios.

While expertise is needed, hands-on experience is also very important. Every case of fire damage needs care since incorrect assumptions early on can prolong or derail the restoration process. With experienced professionals like the professionals at SERVPRO, such misconceptions are less likely to happen.

Make sure that the fire restoration company you choose has more than enough experience and has handled their fair share of restoration projects.

Reviews

You can get first-hand information from the company's reviews regarding their experiences working with each particular fire restoration company. You can also ask for recommendations from other sources, such as your insurance agent or adjuster.

Rather than fixating on a single negative or positive review, look for a pattern. Even the best companies have a few outliers in their feedback profiles.

Explore specialties

Different fire restoration companies have different areas they specialize in. Every belonging to be restored is made of different materials and textiles so the company should handle and treat them accordingly. Determine your priorities, and ask the company about their strengths of restoring similar items.

Recovery time

Seconds can make the difference between being able to restore an item and having to replace it. Some items are sentimental and really can’t be duplicated or repurchased. Choose a company that offers quick response times. They should also provide sound advice on the actions to take when salvaging possessions from a fire. SERVPRO thoroughly documents non-salvageable items.

Detailed schedule

A good fire restoration company should provide an in-depth, estimated completion date and a clear and defined schedule of the steps their team will take during the recovery process.

Storage facilities

Some companies offer storage facilities. If they do, find out more information about those facilities such as storage space and other conditions like security and temperature control. Likewise, inquire whether the company provides packing services and how accurate they are at keeping records. This is something SERVPRO spends time doing right the first time, to avoid any issues for our customers later on!

Costs

Most fire restoration companies will provide a free initial consultation regarding the work to be done. While these costs typically vary based on the extent of damage, having an estimate allows you to pick the option that falls closer to the amount you are willing to spend.

With these few factors and considerations, you should be able to pick a fire restoration company that can meet your expectations. In Northwest Arkansas, SERVPRO of Fayetteville/Springdale is the industry leader.

Is Your Smoke Detector Working Correctly in your Springdale home?

5/14/2021 (Permalink)

Are your smoke detectors working correctly?

In many homes and businesses the answer is no. Often the problem is that they are perceived as a hassle and there are too many false alarms. But, smoke detectors are very important in the case of a fire and could save your life. The information below will help you troubleshoot your system because the simple fact is that smoke detectors can save lives and can prevent property damage.

All too often the answer for property owners is to disable the system to avoid the nuisance alarms. The batteries are removed, the system is disabled, or the devices are removed entirely. This is usually undetected, especially in private homes where fire officials do not perform regular inspections and have limited enforcement powers.

There are 3 basic types of systems but the tips below are largely the same for each.

  • Single station units are the ones you buy at the hardware store and screw to the ceiling.
  • Hardwired/interconnected may look the same but they activate as a group ensuring that all areas of the home get the message.
  • Monitored systems may be wired or wireless but they notify the fire department when activated. The other previously listed options, only notify who is in the home.

The smoke detectors themselves are typically one of 2 types: Ionization or photoelectric.  Ionization units use a small amount of radioactive material that detects invisible particles created by the fire using electrical currents.  They are more expensive so most people have photoelectric units.  Photoelectric units use a beam of light which is deflected by smoke particles to activate.

The main problem is that other things like dust particles or bugs can enter the chamber, block the light, and set off the alarm. To prevent these issues, follow these tips:

  • Cover the detector when working near it
  • Put a monitored alarm system on test if you are doing something that may activate the system
  • Change your batteries each time you change the clocks
  • Use a vacuum to clean the unit periodically
  • Units have a manufacture date on the back of them and they expire after 7-10 years depending on the brand. Replace them when needed.

Whatever you do, don’t disable these important systems.  The fire department would much rather respond and find a minor issue than fight a significant fire because your system was disabled.  Your local fire department is most likely offering a complimentary home safety survey which can answer any questions you have along with other helpful advice.

Red Cross Safety Tips for your Fayetteville Home

7/1/2020 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO if you've got a fire or storm emergency! We are always here to help!

TORNADOES Tornadoes can strike without warning and destroy a community in seconds. Before a tornado warning is issued for your area, here are some things you should do:

  1. Know your community’s warning system.
  2. Pick a place where family members can gather if a tornado is headed your way. It could be your basement or, if there is no basement, a center hallway, bathroom, or closet on the lowest floor. Keep this place uncluttered.
  3. If you are in a high-rise building and don’t have enough time to go to the lowest floor, pick a place in a hallway in the center of the building.
  4. Remove damaged limbs from trees.
  5. Move or secure lawn furniture, trash cans, hanging plants or anything else that can be picked up by the wind and become a projectile.

THUNDERSTORM SAFETY STEPS Thunderstorms injure an average of 300 people every year, and cause about 80 fatalities. Here are the top thunderstorm safety steps you should follow:

  1. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to the storm to be struck by lightning. Go to safe shelter immediately.
  2. As the storm approaches, take shelter in a building.
  3. If you are driving, pull off the roadway and park. Stay in the car with the windows closed and turn on the emergency flashers. Avoid touching metal or other surfaces that conduct electricity in and outside of the vehicle.
  4. If you are inside, unplug appliances and avoid using the telephone or any electrical appliances. Avoid taking a bath or shower, or running water for any other purpose.
  5. If you are caught outside and cannot reach a safe building, avoid high ground, water, tall, isolated trees and metal objects such as fences or bleachers. Picnic shelters, dugouts and sheds are not safe.

Post Fire: What Next for your Fayetteville home?

6/18/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO is the leader in water and fire mitigation and restoration!

If you are like most people, when you think of fire damage, it conjures up pictures of flames and smoke. Images of charred furniture and walls.  Clothing and linens may have to be replaced or professionally cleaned.  And then you may start to think about the odor that accompanies a residential fire or smoke event. But what are we missing here? When there’s fire, there’s….well, there’s going to be water.  Lots of water.

If your home or business is equipped with a fire sprinkler system, such a system can release as much as 24 gallons of Water PER MINUTE. Since we are on the subject of Fire Sprinkler Systems (FSS), here are some facts and myths:

According to Tufts Public & Environmental Safety

  • Water from a FSS causes more damage vs. the fire itself. False. The damage that the fire leaves behind is much greater than the damage caused by the FSS.
  • When the FSS kicks in, every sprinkler head is activated. False. Sprinkler heads are activated on an individual base by temperatures greater than 155 degrees. Fires in residential properties are typically extinguished or controlled by 1 sprinkler head. A study put together during an 80 year period of fire sprinkler use revealed 82% of fires were controlled by 2 or fewer sprinkler heads. Additionally, it was found that 6 or fewer heads controlled 90% of all fires.

What about the fireman’s hose? Also according to the Tufts University research, 80-125 gallons of water is released per minute from the fire hose.

Again, where there’s fire, there will be lots of water. So, what to do about all this water? Here are some simple steps:

  • Safety is first and foremost. You can rest assured, when your local fire department is involved, they will communicate to you when your property is safe.
  • As soon as you can, call your insurance agent or their claims hot line. Don’t wait on this step because waiting on mitigation will increase the risk of additional damage. And insurance companies do not like that.
  • Call SERVPRO! Your insurance carrier (agent or claims representative) may suggest a restoration company and many recommend SERVPRO. However, if they do not, you can still choose SERVPRO. Rest assured, your local SERVPRO franchise will hold the proper licenses and certifications. SERVPRO is properly certified by the IICRC and will evaluate the damage and will coordinate with your insurance companies’ claims department.

Here are some things to avoid:

  • DO NOT use electric appliances or anything electronic until your premises is dry.
  • DO NOT use a vacuum to remove water. A sump pump is fine.
  • DO NOT enter your premise or any room that is not structural sound.

Remember, the damage does not end with the fire itself. And a fire can be overwhelming and obviously devastating. So, call the company who is trained, certified and truly cares about making your Fire Emergency “Like it never even happened.”

Potential Sources for Fires you should be aware of to take care of your Springdale home.

6/4/2020 (Permalink)

House & apartment fires can be caused by several different sources. These can range anywhere from the misuse of appliances to faulty heating equipment to smoking in the bedroom. Here are some of the most common causes of house fires and precautions you can take.

  1. Cooking equipment.

The preparation of a meal using your oven can create a problem if the cook gets distracted and leaves the kitchen and stove unattended. One simple rule of thumb: if you’re the cook, stay in the kitchen. If you have to leave have someone come in and watch your food.

  1. Heating.

Always keep portable heaters at least 3 to 4 feet away from anything that could catch fire. That includes furniture, clothing, curtains or bedding. If you have a furnace, it is recommended that you have a qualified HVAC contractor inspect and clean the unit on an annual basis. Making sure the furnace is working safely and up to safety standards is vital in keeping your family safe.

  1. Smoking in bedrooms.

If you must smoke, never, ever smoke in bed. Make sure that your bedroom and bed is off limits when it comes to smoking. Fire starting in the bedroom make up over 70% of all house fatalities in the US. If a cigarette is discarded and not extinguished properly, you will likely be calling 911. Always make sure the cigarette butt is extinguished because it can stay lit for several hours.

  1. Electrical equipment.

There are many electrical appliances in the average home or apartment. Take a toaster for example. You can start a fire if it has a faulty cord. Or in other words, if that cord is frayed. An outlet can easily be overloaded with plugs that offer multiple outlets. Be careful never to overload an outlet. Especially in older homes that were not wired for all of the electrical appliances that we use today. Make sure all of your outlets are grounded properly. A qualified electrician can help you with this.

  1. Candles.

They help make our homes and apartments smell nice. But candles, unattended, can easily burst into flames. Especially if they’re placed too close to flammable items such as a box of tissues or towels. Never leave a candle unattended. If you’re going to leave the room, blow that candle out! The National Fire Protection Association reports that roughly 1/3 of home candle fires start in the bedroom. And these fires caused 33% of the related deaths and 51% of the related injuries.

  1. Curious children.

Curiosity can get the best of a child and make him or her see what happens when a fire is set to an object. Always keep matches and lighters far away from your children as possible.

  1. Faulty wiring.

A licensed electrician can inspect the wiring of your home and perhaps save your life. A home with inadequate wiring is a fire just waiting to happen. Some clues as to whether a house has faulty wiring can include lights that dim when you turn on another appliance, for one appliance to work you have to disconnect another, fuses or breakers that trip frequently. Other causes of fire include barbecues, flammable liquids and improperly installed lighting.

After a fire, there may be debris in your home, which could get in the way of the restoration process. Removing the waste can help our crew to complete the restoration process efficiently and reduce odors. We can also remove all items that are too damaged to restore. Our team can remove any items that do not appear to be destroyed to prevent them from being contaminated further. We can clean these items and prepare them for when you return to your home.

During a fire, various materials produce different chemical residues that can cause health effects to the property’s occupants. The smoke residues can also cause structural damage if not restored on time or professionally. Before cleaning the affected surfaces in your house, our restoration experts can test them to determine which cleaning method is best suited for that surface. During testing, we categorize materials as non-salvageable and salvageable.

In some cases, our technicians can wash fabrics and shampoo carpets to restore them to their preloss state. We use different types of cleaning products to clean carpeting and upholstery. For instance, carpet and upholstery shampoos are blends of solvents, detergents, and cleaning agents for brightening all fabrics.

Clean air is another essential factor in fire damage restoration. The ash, smoke, and other airborne contaminants can cause health issues to the occupants. We can use air vacuums to clean the contaminants from the air. These devices have a type of filtration that removes 99 percent of all the particles that are in the air. If you have fire or smoke damage, call SERVPRO today to see how we can help!

Home Fire Evacuation Plan

10/15/2019 (Permalink)

Make a plan to lessen panic during an Emergency

Emergencies can happen anywhere, at any time. If you were to have a fire in your home, would you and your family know what to do? Do you have a safe place designated as the meeting zone? If not, it’s important that you have a family meeting to decide these details and prepare yourselves for all scenarios. Having this plan in place can save your family in case of an emergency.

The following is a descriptive list of how to make your evacuation plan.

  • Draw a map of your home and come up with an evacuation plan.
    • Consider the best area to exit the home. Have a backup in case the fire is blocking your exit route.
  • Walk around each room and find two ways that you could get out of the home.
    • Writing down these details and sharing them with your family will prepare all of you in case of an emergency.
  • Open every window in the home and make sure each one can be easily opened
    • Doing this ensures that if you are in an emergency and have one option to exit the home, you’ll be able to get out in a hurry.
  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom and outside each sleeping area
    • By making sure you’re going to be alerted properly, you will save time when a fire is truly a threat
  • Go outside and choose a meeting place in the front of the property
    • This needs to be far enough to get away from the smoke and fire, but not too far that you can’t see it from your home. Parents will want to be able to make sure that everyone is out of the home before closing the door to the home.
  • Remember that opening and closing doors increases the amount of oxygen you are giving the fire, so keep the door open on a minimal basis.
  • Make sure every single member of the family is aware of the plan
  • Save your County Fire Department’s phone number on every cell phone
  • Rehearse a fire drill
  • Print several copies of your evacuation plan. Tape one to the fridge. Keep another in your garage.
    • The more you see this plan in your home, the more familiar you will be with the plan.

When in doubt, throw it out!

9/10/2019 (Permalink)

After you have a fire in your home, there are a few things that may seem salvageable that you should throw away and vice versa. Here is a list of hous

Non-Perishable Food

Depending on where the fire is in relation to your kitchen is a big factor. If you had a fire in a separate area of the home, there may be little to no damage. Extreme heat can also be a factor because canned food and other non-perishable items can go bad when they have contacted high temperatures. When it comes to food, you do not want to assume that anything is safe to eat. If ANY items have soot, fire extinguisher dust or heat, go ahead and consider the food contaminated and don’t eat it.

Perishable Food

If your refrigerator wasn’t affected in the fire, and has a good airtight seal, then your perishable foods may be safe to eat. If the refrigerator was damaged by the fire, everything that was inside it is NOT safe for consumption and should be discarded. If your fridge is left at room temperature for too long, the food inside will go bad. If the inside of the fridge smells smoky, throw everything in the fridge away.

Makeup and Medicines

These items may or may not be affected depending on where the fire was located. Inspect these items for signs of heat, fire extinguisher dust, soot and any other contaminants. If you doubt whether or not to keep an item, toss it. Contaminated makeup is not safe for your skin and can cause breakouts. Contaminated medicine can be very dangerous and without having a way to test it, it should not be consumed.

Clothing and Textiles

If you have any cloth items that are burnt, obviously they can’t be restored to preloss condition and should be discarded. Other items that haven’t been burned might smell like smoke and can be salvaged. A simple wash in the laundry is typically not enough to remove smoke odor from your garments. SERVPRO has an ozone machine that we use to remove the smoky odors from your textiles. This can be used on anything from clothing, to bedding and curtains. The ozone machine is the best and most efficient way to make sure that the smoke odor is gone. Be sure to use strict judgment when determining children/babies items. When in doubt it, throw it out!

What To Do After A Fire In Your Fayetteville Home

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

The professionals of SERVPRO of Fayetteville / Springdale strive to answer all your fire damage-related questions.

Starting Over: What To Throw Out After Fayetteville Fire Damage

Our talented team of Fire and Smoke Restoration Technicians (FSRT) can clean surfaces of fire residue and renew the appearance and function of a broad range of household goods, personal possessions, and furnishings after a blaze in Fayetteville. We can arrange for repair and restoration of severe structural charring and use advanced technologies to neutralize smoke odors and improve air quality.

Because we promise to employ the best practices of the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) on every job, safety, and health concerns require we recommend disposal of some food and personal care items after fire damage in Fayetteville. Because every fire loss is unique, it is essential to evaluate the items in your home at the time of the fire. Even if they appear undamaged, consider the following.

Effects of High Temperatures
Canned and bottled food might seem impervious because of factory sealing. When flames exposed the contents of the containers to high temperatures, however, microorganisms can grow. Even items in a refrigerator or freezer can expose individuals to the risk of spoilage. If the power went out or the gasket on the cooling appliance failed,  food temperatures could rise enough to encourage toxins to form.

Heating personal care items can change their chemical composition. Medications also may transform into less useful or even hazardous substances after the fire’s heat. If you have questions, ask the SERVPRO team for guidance.

Effects of Fire Residues
Soot particles can be incredibly fine and also sticky while containing many toxic substances. Any food in boxes or on the counter is compromised quickly. An open jar or tube of health care or hygiene product admits fire residues readily. Disposable dishes and eating utensils become coated, often with the thin but tenacious protein-based film from grease or food fires. Fire residues can contaminate containers with threaded covers, the dust-like soot working its way up the threads and into the food or personal care preparations or medications.

If you have any doubts about the safety of food or personal care items, throw them out. Keep a list and consult with our SERVPRO team. Your insurance policy might offer compensation, and we help with documentation.

The professionals of SERVPRO of Fayetteville / Springdale strive to answer all your fire damage-related questions. Round-the-clock and 365 days a year you can contact us at (479) 419-5544.

We Put The Flames Of Worry Out In Fayetteville After A Fire Damage Disaster

6/4/2019 (Permalink)

After a fire disaster, there is a lot of stress and anxiety. You need a team you can count on in this difficult time. We are available 24/7.

Deodorizing Furniture from Your Fire-Damaged Fayetteville Home

Fire loss incidents can have extensive negative effects on your Fayetteville home. While many property owners tend to fixate on their need for structural repair or overall reconstruction needs, other concerns within the house after a fire can have severe consequences as well without the appropriate management. Our professionals have years of experience with recovering fire loss effects including soot and smoke staining and harsh odors that often linger after extinguishment.

Ultimately, there is an order to the way fire damage in your Fayetteville household gets addressed.  The way this gets decided is how devastating a symptom is compared to other effects that exist after the disaster. In many cases, this leaves effects like harsh smoke odors on the bottom of the list to get restored closer to the end of the recovery process. As pushed off as restoring this effect might be, there are many sophisticated approaches that our SERVPRO professionals have for removing smoke odors from items like furniture.

With a full contents department that can arrive to fire loss incidents along with our restoration crew, we can begin to earmark items and belongings for removal when the initial inspection takes place. Often lightly or unaffected items must still get removed from the premises to protect them from the possibility of getting damaged by soot and smoke residues and lingering odors.

If furniture gets removed, our SERVPRO technicians can put these items into an ozone chamber in our facility. This area infuses air with an added oxygen molecule that can bond with foul odors and neutralize them. The process is also similar in mobile units we can use at your home, but can be dangerous for humans and pets to be around as it happened.

After fire damage, there are many things that a homeowner must address to return their property to preloss condition. From soot and smoke staining removal to deodorization, let our SERVPRO of Fayetteville / Springdale fire restorers make it “Like it never even happened.” Give us a call anytime at (479) 419-5544.

Contact SERVPRO for Fire Damage Mitigation and Content Pack-Outs in the Springdale Area

Pack-Out of Contents Makes Fire Damage Remediation in Springdale Even Faster and More Complete

After a fire in your Fayetteville home, you are likely feeling helpless, hopeless, and out of control. The last thing you want to consider is moving contents out of your house, fearing at a time of great loss that you might never see treasured items again. We can help you see how a pack-out of the affected furnishings and other items in your home both speeds the remediation efforts inside the structure and offers the best chance of preserving precious personal property.

Fire damage to your Fayetteville home is a messy proposition. Water from firefighting, charring from the heat, and soot deposit from the smoky, incomplete combustion of a wide range of materials all need attention, the sooner, the better. Taking the time to move out furniture, household goods, and personal possessions might seem a poor use of limited resources. On the contrary, relieving the structure of items that impede the restoration efforts is a smart move.

When we transport the contents of your home to our secure production facility, we clear the decks for more efficient cleanup. Items need not be repositioned many times as our crews move room by room removing water and debris and cleaning sooty residues. Be assured that SERVPRO uses a carefully thought out protocol during pack-outs, the Contents Claim Inventory Service (CCIS). We list, barcode, and photograph items as necessary and practical, documenting their condition and allowing easy tracking of our evaluation, cleaning, drying, and restoring of each.

Throughout the entirety of the process, we work closely with you and your insurance company, making informed decisions on recovery or disposal of items in a systematic way. SERVPRO is proud to be of service in restoring documents, photos, heirlooms, furniture, and household goods from the ravages of fire. Using specialized processes like freeze-drying; foam, immersion, and ultrasonic cleaning; and industrial washing and drying systems, we can limit your need to replace items. Contributing to the comfort and peace of mind our customers feel when their familiar possessions return restored -- from wedding photos to a beloved teddy bear -- is an honor and privilege.

SERVPRO Can Restore Fired Damaged Properties in Springdale Reeking of Odors

5/8/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Removes Charred Debris in Springdale Area Homes and Also Provides Improved Air Quality (IAQ) with Our Advanced Equipment

How Do Ozone Machines Help after Fires in Springdale Homes

Fire loss incidents can often spread far beyond the ignition point, spreading through multiple rooms and areas of your Springdale home. While each of these effects must get addressed to return your home to its original condition, many homeowners fixate on specific symptoms that make comfortable living difficult in incidents that do not relocate the occupants of the house. As reputable restoration professionals that have years of experience in fire loss recovery, we can address each of these consequences for our customers efficiently and effectively.

Much of the work that we do to recover Springdale homes from their fire damage hinges on the advanced tools and equipment that we have at our disposal in restoring properties. For widespread impacts like odors and indoor air quality concerns, we have several units that can address these threats quickly and efficiently. The most powerful of our tools for air purification and odor removal is our ozone machine. This portable unit can attack a broad area of your property and can become a fast-working deodorization and cleaning tool for the affected environment.

Ozone machines help our SERVPRO professionals to quickly gain control over damaging odors and harsh scents that result from smoke and charring in your property. These units work by infusing the environment and affected materials with an extra oxygen molecule (O3 is ozone) that chemically reacts with odor compounds to neutralize them. As compelling as this process is, it is not without its risks.

This chemical reaction that occurs with the use of ozone machines is not safe for humans, pets, or plants to be around, and so the property must be vacated for several hours after the machine has been turned off.  In situations where fire-damaging results might not demand relocation of the family, this can be a problematic solution for our SERVPRO professionals to organize. The gas can also degrade plastic, vinyl, and rubber items. We can erect an ozone chamber with poly sheeting at our facility to use this device. We must carefully determine when and if ozone machines are best used in area homes to remove odors. There are other options in our arsenal of equipment.

Whenever fire loss incidents occur, you can always trust in the fast response and expertise of our SERVPRO of Fayetteville / Springdale team. Give us a call anytime at (479) 419-5544.

Advanced Solutions That Help Improve Clean Up After Fire Damage in Springdale

Fire damages properties in different ways including depositing soot and other residues leaving surfaces blackened. The level of difficulty in removing such residues can be easy or difficult depending what the fire burned, and how intense blaze was, among other factors. The surface affected can also determine the difficulty level. For example, cleaning residues from the ceiling is more difficult than cleaning walls. Professional restoration companies use advanced solutions to improve results.

After fire damage in Springdale, residues soil many household items including electronics and fine jewelry. Residues such as soot are acidic so they can corrode the affected items if left in place for long. Cleaning up such valuable materials is tricky because you can damage them in the process. Our SERVPRO technicians utilize specialized equipment such as ultrasonic cleaners to clean non-porous valuables. An ultrasonic restoration cleaner has a pre-soak chamber, ultrasonic chamber, a rinse section, and a drying chamber guaranteeing proper cleaning.

When cleaning some sections of the house like the ceiling, you might face access challenges because of the elevation. Residues falling from the ceiling can also soil other areas such as walls and floors already cleaned. It is possible to overcome such problems with better planning and a degree of innovation. Our SERVPRO technicians organize the process so that cleaning starts in higher areas. We also add extension poles to spotting pad holders to ease access and the angle of attack when cleaning up ceilings.

Choosing a cleanup method should be done with care since it is possible to harm the surface physically in the process of removing soils. For example, surfaces covered in acoustic tiles can lose their sound deadening properties during cleanup. SERVPRO has developed a unique procedure for cleaning acoustical ceilings known as Peroxide Active Ceiling Cleaning. It is a water-based solution that utilizes stabilized hydrogen peroxide sprayed at 40-60 psi on the affected surface. The method works perfectly on blown ceilings that might deteriorate or dissolve if wet cleaning is utilized.

Advanced cleaning solutions help solve many seemingly tricky problems. Call SERVPRO of Fayetteville / Springdale to assist you using such an approach. You can reach our crew at (479) 419-5544 any time.

When Smoke Gets in Your Eyes- How to Neutralize the Lingering Fumes From a Fire in Your Springdale Home

10/23/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke fumes are lingering effects from fires. SERVPRO can help you neutralize the odors and restore the air quality of your home.

Overcoming Smoke Damages After a Fire in Your Springdale Home

When disaster strikes your Springdale home, you might not entirely be aware of the effects of the incident until you can begin the process of cleaning up the mess and restoring the damage it caused to your residence. With situations like fires, widespread effects can sometimes get overlooked in light of the more pressing and immediate concerns like structural weaknesses or reconstruction needs. Our technicians can help you with every facet of fire restoration in your home.

Many people do not fully know what fire damages exist after one occurs in their Springdale home. This fact is partly due to the potential dangers that exist with assessing the damages on your own. One of the reasons that our SERVPRO emergency response team is available 24/7 is to help you understand the effects of a disaster to your home, no matter when that disaster occurs.

We begin to assess the full scope of the damages and map out a plan to restore these effects entirely as soon as our team arrives at your home. One of the effects that might seemingly get pushed to the side initially is smoke damages. While these are on the agenda to get resolved, it is often one of the final steps in our restoration process to deodorize all of the affected areas and contents of your home.

To do this, we require specialized equipment that helps us to modify the harsh odors left behind after a fire on a molecular level. Thermal foggers and hydroxyl generators can neutralize these odor molecules on contact, leaving no discernable scent behind. This process waits until any demolition, and other restoration steps have gotten taken to maximize its effect.

While you might see fire damages to your home as an intimidating presence, professional restorers like ours can take the weight off of your shoulders and help you to get your house back to the way it used to be. You can count on our SERVPRO of Fayetteville / Springdale technicians to help through every step of this process. Give our emergency response team a call 24/7 at (479) 888-2403.

Choosing Professional Restoration For Fire Damage

Fires can happen with little to no warning and spread quickly throughout your Fayetteville residence. More to this point, there are instances in which there is a clear cause for what caused the damage, and others which remain a mystery. Regardless of how it happened, your focus after the extinguishing completes is restoring the damages and getting your property back to pre-damage condition.

It is good to know your limitations when it comes to cleaning and restorative work for your residence. Homeowners can usually care for many of the lower-scale concerns that their residence faces, but with more widespread and penetrative fire damages in your Fayetteville home, this situation is better left to the professionals at SERVPRO.

Regardless of how a fire began, your first concern in getting the damage restored in your home is to assess just how widespread this damage is. An inspection should give you all of these details as well as a general idea regarding the cost and estimated ballpark timeline to get the process completed.

Another thing that you're going to want to think about that could keep you from being convinced to clean up this mess on your own is the requirements of the insurance provider that you have for the house. When you go to file a claim about damages incurred in a fire or some other type of disaster, they often seek to have these effects restored and repaired by licensed, certified professionals like those on our SERVPRO team.

One final consideration about choosing professional restoration for the fire damage in your home is the structural concerns for your house. You might not be able to assess the threats that exist in your home following a fire like a trained restoration specialist can.

There is little you can do when a fire breaks out in your home than to be hopeful that the first responders can reach it promptly. Once this is over and you have to assess the damage you face, contact the trusted and reputable SERVPRO of Fayetteville / Springdale fire damage restoration specialists. We are available 24/7 by calling (479) 888-2403.

Fire Damage Follows Home Improvement Project In Springdale

Improperly Stored Items May Mean Fire & Smoke Damage Cleanup for Springdale Homes--Call SERVPRO for Help

SERVPRO Says to Properly Store Combustible Materials to Prevent Fires

Although many people in Springdale might think the warning on the paint can or solvent is overly cautious, the fact is a significant number of fires happen because of improperly discarded oily rags. Over a thousand homes per year experience fire due to spontaneous combustion according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), The majority of the combustion scenarios involve oily rags. If your home is one of them, we are ready to help with post-fire restoration.

If you fail to properly manage the cleanup of a typical household project like staining a deck or painting a room you can face fire damage to your Springdale home. Oily rags used for wiping and cleaning can pile up as you complete a project. Some oils can oxidize, creating their own heat with no need of an external source, and igniting the material used to absorb them. If the rags are near other volatile substances, a serious blaze can result. We are familiar with the types of residues left on surfaces after oil-based combustion and can assist in removing them and the odor that also remains.

The soot left behind from spontaneous combustion can be thick and sticky. The SERVPRO crew dispatched to your home matches the consistency and source of the soot with the proper cleanser among the range of professional cleaners we employ in our restoration projects. The production team leader on your job assesses the consistency and characteristics of the soot and develops a plan that safely and efficiently eradicates it. If chemical extinguishing products subdued the fire, we consider that as we choose products and methods to remediate the fire damage.

An oil based fire typically leaves a strong and unpleasant odor. SERVPRO takes a deliberate approach to odor elimination. First, we remove the burned items and clean the affected space with appropriate products. If odor remains, we consider using thermal foggers that recreate the fire conditions as deodorizers combust in a heated chamber and bond with the odiferous particles, modifying them, so they are odor neutral.

We also use advancements in this restoration specialty, including hydroxyl generators and other oxygenation equipment. UV light creates radicals that change odor-bearing particles at the atomic level, rendering them free from noxious smells. Air scrubbers fitted with HEPA and carbon filters can also relieve the air of unwanted odors. SERVPRO also considers sealing odors into structural components, creating a barrier that prevents the odors trapped within building materials from releasing in vapor form into the air.

SERVPRO of Fayetteville / Springdale has the knowledge and the trained crews to manage fire damage recovery of any type or extent. As soon as possible after the blaze extinguished, call 479) 419-5544 to start the remediation process.

Cooking Increases The Fire Damage Risk Indoors And Out In Springdale

A fire that starts in an indoor or outdoor food preparation area features protein, fat, and grease in the smoke.

Cooking Increases The Fire Damage Risk

Springdale summertime fun includes firing up the grill and serving family and friends favorites like burgers, brats, chicken, and ribs. If your carefree mood means you neglect some BBQ safety tips, errant coal may transform fun to fear. When outdoor grilling puts your home at risk of fire damage, we can help.

A flare-up can catch an overhanging eave or a patio umbrella and soon ignite a supporting exterior wall of your Springdale home. Fire damage to a residence is no less devastating because it begins outdoors. Once the blaze takes hold, it can spread quickly into your home. If the winds are strong, the fire can grow fast and threaten a whole house catastrophe. Your first call is 911 and the second is to our 24-hour number to arrange for reliable and speedy fire damage repair.

When the firefighters leave, SERVPRO’s crew arrives. Our production manager takes a quick walkthrough, assessing the tasks needed to return your home to pre-fire condition. We make sure remediation of the effects of the chemicals and water used to knock down the flames are part of the integrated plan. Safety constraints require that the “slip and fall” possibilities posed when slick decks and floors are part of the restoration area need immediate attention. Removing the water and chemicals allows us to move onto the soot and smoke cleanup hurdles.

A fire that starts in an indoor or outdoor food preparation area features protein, fat, and grease in the smoke. The particulates may not combust completely, leaving a sticky thick and black residue inside and out. Protein-based smoke coat surfaces with a thin but tenacious film, almost like a varnish. SERVPRO crew members train extensively to be able to match cleaning products and tools to the type of soot left behind.

We may need a solvent or cleaning agent with wetting agents and surfactants to loosen the bond between the soot and the surface. SERVPRO stocks fire damage response service vehicles with a range of cleaners and equipment to make short work of the debris left behind. Sometimes we employ abrasive cloths or sponges to scour away the soot, Materials that burned hotter can leave a loose ashy byproduct that can be removed with dry sponges or our powerful vacuums.

When accidental fire makes a BBQ a tense and scary event, SERVPRO of Fayetteville / Springdale is here to bring back the joy of summer. Call (479) 419-5544 when the fire is out, and we pledge to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Call in The Experts After Fire Damages Your Harmon Kitchen

1/5/2018 (Permalink)

Substances left behind by a small kitchen fire require the skills and knowledge of SERVPRO professionals to properly clean up.

Even Small Kitchen Fires Require Professional Fire Remediation Specialists

Smart Harmon homeowners assure themselves of quick access to fire extinguishers and quickly manage accidental fires during cooking. Because the crisis seems averted, you may be tempted to take sole responsibility for the post-fire clean up as well. Failing to arrange for professional assessment may be a mistake you want to avoid. We pledge to make our assistance with your fire damage count.

A boiled-dry pot or spattering pan of oil ignites quickly, especially if the cook is distracted in your Harmon kitchen. Fire damage threatens appliances, walls, countertops, and flooring. Fortunately, a handy fire extinguisher knocks down the flames, and you breathe a sigh of relief. Before you treat the aftermath as just a routine cleaning task, invite our fire damage restoration crew to evaluate the situation.

The “soil” left by fire does not always respond well to traditional cleaning strategies. It also contains hazardous substances from the combustion of textiles, wood, insulation, and other structural or appliance materials. Add in the chemical residue from the extinguisher, and the realization grows that this a toxic mix. Cleanup of this type of debris is a job for SERVPRO technicians trained to identify the challenges and manage the potential for harm experienced by the individuals doing the work.

There is also the risk that individuals who are unfamiliar with proven smoke and soot damage cleaning protocols cause more damage when attempting to mitigate the mess. When experienced and certified SERVPRO workers complete the tasks this risk is eliminated. Soot must be assessed for its varied characteristics, and the proper cleaning products and tools chosen to eradicate the various kinds of residues. One fire can deposit light, ashy soot, sticky greasy soot, and soot that hardens into a lacquer-like coating, almost impossible to remove without specialized equipment and professional cleaning products.

The substances generated by fire are highly corrosive and must be eliminated from surfaces as quickly as possible. Permanent discoloration of fabrics and plastics, etching of metals and glass, and deterioration of wood are just some of the ongoing issues caused by fire damage not remediated appropriately. SERVPRO can respond within hours, essential to a successful fire damage recovery as soot and smoke begin to destroy structures and contents within the first day after the fire event.

SERVPRO of Fayetteville / Springdale is ready with the crews, products, and equipment to restore your home after a fire loss. Call us for a consultation 24 hours a day, seven days a week at (479) 419-5544.

Why You Need Professional Help in Eliminating Odors After Fire Damage in Fayetteville

11/9/2017 (Permalink)

Fires can leave behind a lingering odor, SERVPRO has a three phase process to rid your home of the smells.

Three Phases to Eliminate Odors Left Behind by Fire Damage

Getting rid of the smoky odor from a fire damaged home can be a tough challenge. The smell of smoke and burnt material can linger on long after the fire damage to your Fayetteville home. Although you can take steps to minimize the odor, it is best to leave this job to the expert professionals.

Fire damage to your Fayetteville home can have you smelling smoke for days after the incidence. Many factors can make it difficult to get rid of the odor entirely and eliminating it is achieved through a multi-phasic strategy.

Heightened Awareness to Smell

Your perception of the scent is heightened if you know that the property was damaged in a fire. If you are aware of the fire damage, you tend to perceive the odors more intensely. It can pose a big problem in eliminating them entirely.

Furthermore, high temperature and humidity can also increase your perception of smell. So, eliminating the odors requires implementation of multiple techniques to counter this effect. That is why, here at SERVPRO, we employ various state-of-the-art techniques to remove the odors.

Multi-Phase Odor cCntrol

SERVPRO experts use a multiple phase odor eliminating strategy to get rid of the smells as entirely as possible.

Phase 1: The first stage is to contain the odor at the source. A chemical counteractant is sprayed on the charred surfaces to prevent the vaporization of the odor molecules. It creates a barrier between the air and the source of the odor and prevents the odor molecules from vaporizing. SERVPRO uses professional grade odor counteractant in this process.

Phase 2: The second step deals with combating the odor molecules that are already in the air. Strong deodorant vapors are sprayed to neutralize the odor-causing particles in the air.

Phase 3: In this stage, a thermal fogger is utilized to spray solvent-based deodorizers. As the thermal fogger uses heat to dissipate the deodorant, it can reach everywhere the smoke may have entered and combat the odors at the source.

These three phases ensure that the odor is entirely and efficiently eliminated.

Call SERVPRO of Fayetteville / Springdale at (479) 419 5544 to schedule an inspection today. Our experts are eager to help you devise a strategy to eliminate the odor from your fire-damaged home as efficiently as possible.

Historic Homes in Fayetteville Raise the Risk of Fire Damage

5/15/2017 (Permalink)

Contact SERVPRO after fire damage in the bedroom of your historic home in order to get you sleeping in the room quickly after remediation.

SERVPRO can Assess BOTH to Prevent or to Remediate Your Property

Beautiful and elegant, homes in our area that are more than a century old bring the possibility of heightened fire risk because of antiquated electrical service. Grounding adapters used with or without extension cords make it easier to plug in electronics, but also expose your home to the possibility of fire. If a spark or overheated adapter start a blaze, SERVPRO helps with the cleanup.

Frustrated with few bedroom electrical outlets, you decided to use an adapted extension cord and power strip to charge your phone. The charger overheated, causing fire damage to your Fayetteville home when nearby bedding ignited. Fortunately, no injury resulted, but you need help dealing with the aftermath of the flames, smoke, and soot. Fire damage restoration is the heart of what we do, and our results prove this focus.

When fabrics catch fire, they often smolder, spreading thick smoke and a covering of sticky soot throughout your home. Even areas far from the actual fire suffer from a black coating and persistent odors. The SERVPRO fire restoration team inspect all interior spaces as the recovery plan develops. Careful attention to the different strategies taught to our technicians to best clean and restore a variety of materials and items add needed details.

Bed linens and clothing respond well to machine washing, taking care to limit the loads and rinse thoroughly. Curtains and wardrobe elements that are not washable profit from dry cleaning, although be sure the shop has experience with fire damage. Foam cleaning is a fine choice for upholstery. Solid surfaces like floors, dressers, and nightstands clean up using a spray and wipe technique. We offer carpet cleaning, definitely not a do-it-yourself option as the gritty and sometimes greasy residue from a fire requires skill to remove.

If you filter light with blinds HEPA vacuuming or immersion cleaning are both viable options. Walls need assessment to decide if dusting or vacuuming is enough, or if scrubbing is indicated. Painting freshens the look but is a choice only after proper cleaning. SERVPRO advises you if you take on some of the tasks like laundering or cleaning knick-knacks.

Smoky or other fire-related odors need professional deodorization. Air fresheners or other coverups are not a permanent solution. SERVPRO deodorization technicians analyze how the smells invaded your home and use methods designed to replicate their spread to eliminate them.

A bedroom fire restoration needs the expertise of SERVPRO of Fayetteville / Springdale. Make the call to (479) 419-5544 immediately, so you soon again rest easy.

Even A Minor Fire Can Affect The HVAC System In Your Johnson Home

12/30/2016 (Permalink)

Smoky Odors in Your Johnson Home Need the Help of SERVPRO

SERVPRO Remediates Odors After a House Fire

During the aftermath of a minor kitchen fire, you managed yourself you may be surprised at how many of the utility and mechanical systems in your dwelling can be affected. Even in areas of the structure that were far from the actual blaze homeowners can report lingering smoke smell and dirty, sooty residue on furnishings, flooring and in the air. The culprit moving the fire debris throughout your home is likely your HVAC system, both heating and cooling ducts equipped with powerful fans that are meant to control the climate inside your home for your and your family’s comfort. If the fire occurred during a time of the when neither heating nor cooling systems were regularly operating, you might not realize that smoky particulates entered through vents and are now being distributed through your home as you turn the heat on. SERVPRO can help control this unfortunate byproduct of an earlier fire with a professional HVAC inspection, evaluation, and cleaning.

During the fire that ignited in your Johnson kitchen you were most concerned about putting out the blaze quickly, perhaps with a well-positioned fire extinguisher, and getting your household back to normal. If you chose to go it on your own secondary damage could be missed. When we respond to your call, our IICRC trained SERVPRO technicians will inspect both the area where the fire started and the rest of the building, paying particular attention to any area where you report smelling smoke or noticing greasy soot and ash. A critical part of our inspection will be to evaluate the forced air heating and cooling ductwork, potential hiding places for the compounds that were sent airborne during your fire. During temperate weather, the system may have been off, but our technicians will look for evidence that air pressure or magnetism or ionization within the ductwork sucked or otherwise attracted smoky particles.

Once we take a close look at the conditions within your heating and cooling systems, our team will plan how to remediate the smell and the gritty, sticky dust that has now invaded your home. SERVPRO technicians are highly trained, well prepared to make decisions on whether a thorough cleaning will take care of the issues or if other approaches are needed. Our crews will determine if any components of the system are damaged and need to be replaced because of the fire damage. In cases where a comprehensive cleaning of the ducts is impractical duct sealing may be recommended, possibly paired with a thermal fogging for deodorizing purposes. Any steps taken to restore the proper operation of your HVAC system will include protection of household contents and perhaps a temporary evacuation of you and your family until any chemical treatments are complete and healthy air quality is restored.

Call us at (479) 419-5544 to respond to your concerns of collateral damage after a kitchen fire. SERVPRO of Fayetteville / Springdale stands ready to solve your smoky smell and sooty residue problems.
